The legendary semi-acoustic “ES-335,” known for its combination of traditional hollow-body resonance and solid-body sustain, continues to captivate many players. Since its release in 1958, it has established itself as a classic model loved by countless guitarists.
The ES-335 we have received this time is a 2003 model with dot inlays and a vintage sunburst finish.
Featuring a laminated maple body with a maple center block, and a mahogany neck with just the right thickness and grip, it maintains the traditional materials of the ES-335. The rosewood fingerboard is adorned with pearloid dot inlays, bringing back the high playability of the past to the modern era.
The two humbucking pickups have “PAF” stickers on the back (though the stickers are peeling). It’s hard to confirm, but they are likely “57 Classics.” This versatile Gibson ES tone has been beloved by players for over 60 years.
Stable tuning and accurate intonation are ensured by Grover tuners, an ABR-1 bridge, and a stopbar tailpiece. Enjoy the vintage-like semi-acoustic sound with this iconic Gibson model from the 2000s.
A Gibson hard case is included (it’s a Custom Shop case, but it has significant wear and tear, and the internal ribbon is broken, causing it to open fully when unlatched. However, it still functions well for transport).
This ES-335 shows considerable use with many dings and scratches, and noticeable paint wear on the body back. Interestingly, there are faint signatures on the top and bottom of the body back. The top signature reads “Larry Carlton,” and the bottom reads “David T Walker.” Both artists visited Japan for a special live show in 2014. It’s possible these signatures were obtained during a meet and greet event at that time. Although we cannot confirm the authenticity of these signatures, it’s a thrilling prospect to imagine.
Setting aside these musings, this guitar delivers the sweet tone characteristic of Gibson, with a thick, punchy attack and a pleasant amount of hollow sound. One of the advantages of this model is the 2 volume and 2 tone controls, which allow for endless playing pleasure. Simply setting it to the middle position and slightly rolling off the bridge tone produced a very enjoyable sound. Even without the Custom Shop label, guitars from this era are exceptionally well-made.
