D’Angelico is a legendary guitar maker based in Manhattan, New York, founded in 1932 by the legendary John D’Angelico.
The guitars left behind by guitar craftsman John D’Angelico all have beautiful looks, excellent playability, and sound, and are now considered highly prized collector’s items, having been used by Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, George Benson, and many other players. The look is now considered a highly prized collectible item.
It has had a great influence not only on players, but also on modern archtop guitar builders, including D’Aquisto, with whom it was manufactured.
The guitar in this shipment is one of the “Deluxe” guitars in D’Angelico’s lineup, which is manufactured for more practical and field-oriented use.
It is made in Asia, which keeps the cost down, but still has a high-class feel with its distinctive looks.
The brand has a strong image of jazz guitars such as full acoustic guitars, but this is a Bedford SH with a semi-solid body!
The Deluxe is the top of the line for solid-body models. The cost performance is very high.
The wood specs include a semi-solid alder body and a 3-ply maple and walnut neck, which is very strong.
The small offset body not only makes it easy to handle, but also provides a great fit when sitting down to play!
The unique “set-through” joint makes it easy to play up to the high frets.
The neck extends to cover the front pickups, and the joint is heel-less for easy access to the high frets.
As mentioned above, the neck is strong, and neck breakage, which is common with set-neck guitars, is less likely to occur or is minimized compared to mahogany necks.
The fingerboard is made of hard ebony, and together with the inlays mixed with Avalon, it has an outstanding high-end feel.
The body shape is unique, but the design around the head is what gives it the D’Angelico presence.
The traditional head shape and inlays give off an overwhelming presence. The truss rod cover, inspired by the Art Deco design represented by the Empire State Building, is also superb.
The truss rod itself is a dual action, which is a convenient specification.
The pegs are Grover locking type, and the distinctive steer-step buttons give the instrument a luxurious feel.
The peg buttons are the same as those used on Gretsch’s Penguin, Falcon, and other high-end Imperial tuners, giving the instrument a very high-end feel.
Seymour Duncan pickups are used in all positions, and although the layout is SSH, this is a rare combination.
The front and center pickups are STR52-1 used for TL type fronts. The center is RWRP specification.
This is a rather rare spec of using two TL type single tones in a SSH layout, but it gives a very good taste in both looks and sound.
The pickups are tuned to have a slightly stronger low component, which, combined with the semi-solid construction, produces a fuller nuance.
However, the ebony fretboard and the small body do not compromise the sparkle of the tone, and it still produces a beautiful tone.
The tone is completely different from the sound often heard on SSH ST-type guitars, and is practical, with plenty of midrange and low end, but with a sparkling tone.
The rear pickup is a Firebird type SM-1b.
The rear pickup is a Firebird type SM-1b, which is a mini humbucker with a bar magnet used as a pole piece.
The magnetic field is narrower than that of a normal mini-humbucker, so it has a lot of high component, which allows for a lot of drive, but also allows for a good sound.
It is not too thin and chirpy in all positions, but has a solid midrange and low end, and when driven, it produces an attractive sound that resonates with a “gallop! It has an attractive sound that resonates with a “Gallin!
