RARE! 1989 Ibanez Dyuke 1 ID80 – Brown Sunburst – Made in Japan – Gig Bag Included

Made in Japan (Fujigen).

This guitar is extremely rare and sought-after by collectors, especially Ibanez Roadstar collectors, who surely appreciate the design queues borrowed from the Roadstar series. The Dyuke line was only produced for a single year, and the guitars were only offered for sale in Japan, making them incredibly difficult to find. I imported this example directly from Japan, and I suspect only a handful of other Dyuke models exist within the USA.

Features include an ash body and 24 fret ebony fretboard, both of which are bound. Components include a pair of Ibanez mini-humbucker pickups with individual volume and tone controls, Sure Grip II knobs, a string-through hardtail bridge and Gotoh tuning machines.

This guitar is pure class and plays like a dream. The very-rare Ibanez mini-humbuckers sound fantastic. The frets have little wear and feel like-new after having been polished (Images 10 and 11). The neck feels fast like an Ibanez should. The ebony fretboard is very nice. I’m uncertain of the radius, but it is definitely flatter than a traditional strat.

I honestly do not believe this guitar has been played very much. It is pushing 40 years old, however, and it required some restoration when I first received it. Unfortunately, this included cosmetic damage from an apparent drop. Luckily, the damage was limited to the back of the guitar. It consisted of multiple chunks missing from the finish, primarily along the back edge. I filled each of these areas with wood filler, stained the filler, and finished with a thin layer of rub-on clear-coat. You will undoubtedly notice these areas when looking through the images, but I have focused on them in the final 3 images specifically. Please view these images to understand how it looks, but keep in mind these areas are entirely on the back of the guitar and are less noticeable under natural lighting. The dings are now stable and shouldn’t advance any further.

Otherwise, the neck pockets feature those all-too-common hairline finish cracks in the corners (Image 22). These are superficial, and the neck is stable. Please view all images to be sure you understand the overall cosmetic condition. The images should be considered part of the description.

The original switch tip had broken off, so I installed a new 3-way switch with gold tip to match the hardware.

The original pickguard was missing, and this guitar is too rare to find an existing template online, but I managed to get a replacement made with a little help from other Reverb users. This included contacting another gracious Dyuke owner to have him trace the pickguard, which I then sent off to have a replacement manufactured. It came out quite well, I think.

The control cavity covers had apparently had the original plastic film left on so long that it fused with the covers and caused discoloration. Anyone who deals with vintage guitars will likely have seen this before. For the sake of appearance, I sanded the film off and spray painted the covers black, then clear.

I think that’s about everything. I love this guitar and hate to see it go, but my hope is that it will go to someone who appreciates it as much as I do. I know I had been looking high and low for a Dyuke for a long time before finding it. It’s not perfect, but it’s super-playable, and it still looks really good, even with the repairs. With how rare these guitars are, it’s difficult to be too critical. I was, and still am, just pumped to have found one.
