Nitro finish, for the look and feel of a classic
The SG Special 2018 wears a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look vintage-y wonderful; they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. This guitar has the look (and feel) of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.
For the 2018 SG Special, Gibson has changed things up a bit with the inclusion of Mini Humbuckers. Full-size humbucker adherents may look askance at the Mini, but these pickups have a sound of their own and should not, in any sense, be considered “budget buckers.” For many discerning guitarists, Mini Humbuckers serve up the perfect sonic sweet spot — offering the noise-free performance of their big brethren, along with a bit of the brightness and spank of single-coils that helps you slice through the track. Due to their smaller size, Minis sense a shorter length of string vibration that mainly contains higher harmonics. Thus you can expect somewhat brighter and more focused tone than full-size ‘buckers tend to deliver. In the neck position, where many full-size humbucking pickups can become muddy, Minis are ideal for chimey rhythm parts. At the bridge, the Mini performs brilliantly for lead work, delivering smooth attack and great sustain. And they can get quite bratty when pushed hard into a high-gain tube amp.
Lean, mean rock machine
The Gibson SG, famous for its comfortable, fast-action neck, is a perennial favorite among guitarists at Sweetwater. Whether you’re chording down low or soloing up high, the distinctive SlimTaper neck carve always feels just right. The guitar’s iconic double-horned cutaway gives you free access to the high registers, while its Plek’d fretboard ensures effortless playability. The Gibson SG Special 2018 is a lean, mean rock machine.
