Gibson L5-S Custom | 1974 | Cherry Sunburst

$ 4099.99

For your vintage-rockin’ pleasure, we present this 1974 Gibson L5-S in Cherry Sunburst. It’s a phenomenal, luscious guitar. It features the flower pot inlay on the headstock, abolone block inlays, and gorgeous multi-ply binding around the neck and double-bound body, like a Les Paul Custom. Five-piece maple neck with a flamed maple body that’s thinner than a Les Paul. It’s like a pancaked Les Paul. But the L5-S Custom is definitely its own thing. It has a few dings and nicks, and one obvious spot of buckle rash on the back, but it’s in perfect working order. The wood is old, strong, and resonant. There have never been any neck issues or headstock breaks, though there are a few nicks on the neck and signs of wear at the fifth fret treble side. But this thing absolutely SINGS. The original owner changed out the bridge pickup for a Gibson Custombucker, though we’re not sure which Custombucker it is. It sounds killer. The original Bill Lawrence ‘Tarback’ humbucker is in the neck. See pictures. Along the way, the mini-toggle switch was disconnected by the previous owner, but can easily be reconnected if you buy the right pickup. We never connected it because we’re not really into phasing a pickup or coil tapping, for that matter. The bridge on this L5-S may not be original. This beauty, when we bought it, also badly needed a refret. We had the best luthier in Salt Lake City handle the refret, and the end result is a much-improved instrument. We’re sad to see this one go, but it’s time to thin the herd to fund other projects. It comes with its original hardshell case.
