Fender Highway One Telecaster Sunburst 2006

$ 1173.64

Fender Highway One Tele, sun burst, made in USA 2006. The Highway One series was Fender’s nice and simple entry point for USA made guitars, pre-dating the American Special and then American Performer line by a few years. The best thing about these guitars is they got a tasty satin nitro finish, something usually only seen on far pricier instruments. That lets the quality alder body breathe a bit more than a standard thick poly finish, which equates to a certain fullness in the tone. Plus, it looks cool: it catches the light in a particular way, softening up the sunburst somewhat and showing a bit of natural play wear around the edges. The neck is pretty modern: slim C shape, satin finish, 9.5″ radius, tall frets… it plays fast and easy. Plug it in, and you get a hot, bright take on the classic Tele twang. The top end is shimmery and vibrant, with an airy wide midrange and a punchy, understated bass; it’s perfect into a lightly driven amp. The closest new equivalent model will set you back a fair bit more cash and doesn’t come with the zesty pickups or nitro finish, so hey, this looks like a smart buy to me.
