Stock Number:  VTG1597.

*** Following the sale on eBay a few days ago of another Thomas Petersen guitar from the ’60s, at a price of £675, prompted me to list this one, on which restoration was recently completed, and priced competitively to sell! That seller who was clearly a classical player, which I am not, commented on the strong lows, mid glow and bright, beautiful body sound of his Thomas Petersen guitar. Without the level of playing skill, I can only say it sounds good to me….could be sound reflects slightly greater body depth? You are welcome to come and try it out for yourself!

*** Although labelled for the Spanish Guitar Centre in London, that guitar had the simple curved head, typical of Petersen student guitars usually sold direct from the workshop in Cumbria, whereas this example has the shaped headstock typical of the Model A guitars Harald Petersen made himself.

*** This is a very interesting and appealing guitar, now the third example I have had with “Thomas Petersen” label, clearly from the ’60s, therefore whilst his father Harald was still making.

*** A full-size Classical guitar, and generally the dimensions are typical of Petersen guitars, although the body is a little deeper than other Petersen guitars are generally. In addition to further fuller description details, please see under “Dimensions” in my Vintage & Traditional Guitars website.

*** Condition….The guitar is clearly all original, except for need to replace the tuners. The guitar has had a busy life, with wear to the top, and to the fingerboard. The top has been re-finished in French Polish, still showing the character marking it has acquired over the decades. Worn frets have been removed, the fingerboard re-levelled, and re-fretted, so playability will be as good as new. Remaining finishes are quite good for age, and the completed work has restored the guitar to a handsome, distinctive, and playable instrument, as it should be for a Petersen original.

The extent of the remedial work required for full restoration of the guitar has been assessed jointly with the highly experienced professional luthier, repairer and classical guitar maker that I work with, after detailed examination. A neck heal repair has been completed, and the neck joint secured and entirely stabilised, to the exacting standards of the luthier. The back was taken off to access and carry out bracing repairs, now re-fixed, with the addition of new binding, which was not fitted originally.

As with some other older Harald Petersen guitars, the now non-standard tuning machine spacing has been overcome by fitting high-quality Rubner, German manufacture, “Single Style Rosewood Special Series” individual machines…Rosewood keys matching the very attractively coloured original Rosewood fingerboard. Replacements of this sort are always a balance between originality and playable functionality. Originally fitted machines remain in the case, and small fitting screw holes remain visible, but not obtrusive and can be filled if desired. The original Bone Nut has been adjusted and re-fitted, and a replacement, taller purpose-made Bone Saddle installed.

*** I haven’t yet embedded a YouTube clip here, but my Vintage & Traditional Guitars website details on this guitar includes YouTube demos of other Petersen guitars.

*** I have restricted the wording here to a basic outline, so please do fully research the details provided on my VTG website, and contact me for any further information in order to fulfil your purchase.

Thank you, Bob Chaffer, Vintage & Traditional Guitars.
